The next generation's Avon lady is calling—with dildos and lube! Ring up your girlfriends.

At first glance, you could mistake the young women huddled in an Upper West Side apartment for a book group. But then one gregarious type tells the gathered about the time her Sicilian father discovered a vibrator in the glove compartment of her car. A few minutes later, someone else dips a finger in a strawberry-flavored body cream and casually reveals, "I'm always looking for new things to do with my boyfriend's penis." Good-bye, Tupperware parties. Hello, dildos. But this type of gathering doesn't resemble an orgy; instead, it's educational and, for the companies that organize them, potentially profitable. Women are hosting sex-toy parties for their nearest and dearest gal pals, affairs that can turn into raucous exchanges of hot talk and hardware. Here's how they work: A host invites guests and a sex-party consultant to her apartment for a night of advanced sex ed. But don't expect a slide show and a droning lecture about human anatomy. Instead, a facilitator totes along a duffel bag full of sensual products—vibrators, dildos, edible powders, flavored lubricants—and then demonstrates them and allows participants to try them out. (Hands only, ladies.) Not so startlingly, sex sells. This party churns up about $800 in sales, 50 percent of which the rep ultimately pockets. Holli, a 27-year-old guest, is looking for fun gadgets. "Being single in NYC, sometimes it's just easier to pleasure yourself rather than go through the hassle of hooking up," she says. Gulie Pirri, 26, who hosted the party, says, "After being with men with different penis sizes, shapes and motions, I wanted the toys I chose to be like real life." And she put her money where it would go to good use: "I bought six vibrators. Two or three are bound to do something."
